In Bali, Denpasar Inflation Exceeds 2008 Projection

Inflation rate of Denpasar for July 2008 alone reached 1.68%, dragging up the accumulative figure along the seven months of 2008 to as high as 6.89%, exceeding the projection set by the provincial government which was 6% for the whole year of 2008. “Soaring inflation was caused by increasing price of in all products and services classifications”, explained the Head of Bali Office of The National Statistic Bureau, Drs. Ida Komang Wisnu.

“Whilst the latest increase of fuel price brought psychological impact to the market, it did not affect the price to the previously predicted extent, prices actually have increased before”, he continued. He mentioned that inflation rate of Denpasar back in January was as high as 2.5% which the highest in Bali history and higher than 1.9% of January 2007, and by far higher than the national inflation which recored 1.7% in the same period. “It clearly show that in Denpasar prices have increased way before the government increased the fuel price”, he concluded.

Furthermore Wisnu strengthen his statement that increase took place in all products and services classification with the following breakdown:
Raw food increased: 2.48%
Education, recreation, and sport: 1.93%
Processed food, cigarette, tobacco: 1.93%
Housing, water, electricity, gas, fuel: 1.83%
Clothing: 0.82%
Medical: 0.04%

The highest price increase recorded in July 2008 was LPG (cooking gas), education (related to new education year), and house lease. In farming product highest increased was recorded by chili which increased at Rp. 30,000 from previous price of only Rp. 6,900.
