Abrasion Devastated a Temple in East Bali

August 4th, 2008

Continuous attack of abrasion along the coast has taken up more than 100 meters of land along the shoreline of Ujung, a small traditional village in East Bali’s regency of Karangasem. The village of Ujung Hyang now does not have seaside temple (Pura Segara) any longer, the temple has been completely taken down to the open sea.

Suteja, the leader of traditional village of Ujung Hyang recalled that back in his childhood, his father was used to take him to the temple to pray and watch dance performance, at that time the temple was located quite far away from the sea. Every afternoon he used to play foot ball on the beach between the temple and the sea.

The neighboring village of Ujung Mantri experiences similar problem. The village was forced to relocate the temple of Ida Batara Dalem away from the beach whilst the water advanced up to the perimeter of the old temple. The residents of the villages do not have sufficient space for religious rituals which involve the sea such as Melasti. Fortunately so far close close relationship with the neighboring village of Ujung Pesisi where most residents are Moslems allowed them to have their Hindu ceremony on the beach of Ujung Pesisi.

Whilst the relationship between the two village with different religions is so far properly maintained, Suteja is seeing potential conflict as the beach of Tanjung Pesisi is also narrowing by abrasion whilst number of fishermen boats using it is increasing.

He insisted the government to buy out the land in front of the historical site of Taman Ujung which is owned by tourism investor, and make it a public area where residents of surrounding villages can have religious rituals. Having it vacate from possible construction made by the owning investor in the future will ensure unobstructed ocean view from Taman Ujung. Additionally, construction of abrasion protection is getting more critical.
