Decreasing Commitment to Safeguard Bali

August 18th, 2008

Degrading environment and decreasing of physical size of Bali potentially lead to severe disaster for the next generation. The next generation will possibly have to fight each other to get a space for living due to current weakness of commitment to maintain sustainability of the island. Crisis of commitment among governmental officials of different regencies in Bali has has jeopardize efforts to maintain Bali environment by their bureaucratic arrogance.

The portrait of fragility of Bali land could be easily visible by looking into the worsening abrasion year after year. Out of 436.8 kilometers of Bali shoreline, 90,07 kilometers fell into severe devastation category, whilst reconstruction effort has only affected 45.75 kilometers so far. Abrasion prevention and reconstruction efforts which has been eating up trillions of government funding have not reached sufficient success so far. Level of devastation remains very high due to combined impact of natural phenomenon and human negligence.

Devastation outreach currently spread into 41 points. Whilst worst abrasion took place in North coast, South coast of Bali is actually by far more fragile. Out of 41 abrasion points, density concentrated more between Gianyar and Nusa Dua with 21 abrasion points, 11  points in North coast, and 9 points in East coast and the neighboring island of Nusa Penida.

Survey conducted by the government has proven that due to severe abrasion, Bali land is continuously decreasing. Global effect of reclamations in other countries have  negatively affect Bali. As a small island Bali is sensitive to increasing water level. National evaluation conducted in Banjarmasin concluded that abrasion is the most critical threat to small islands, including Bali. Therefore crisis in commitment to safeguard Bali has to be reverted into sensitivity to safeguard Bali.
