Bali Governor Insists Suspension of Sand Exploitation at Geger Beach

September 23rd, 2008

Following similar appeal made by the provincial house of representatives, the governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika writes a letter addressed to the regent of Badung A.A. Gde Agung, calling for his special atention on similar letter written by the house of representatives which suggested suspension of beach sand exploitation project at Geger beach.

Interviewed by Bali Post daily at his office, regent’s assistant on economic and development I Wayan Suambara confirmed a meeting between regent Gde Agung and head of Bali public work department and head of Bali environmental supervisory boeard who came as Governor’s envoy to hand the letter. In the meeting regent Gde Agung was accompanied by head of Badung environment office, head of Badung Cipta Karya office, and head of public relation of the regent’s office.

Suambara further explained that in his letter the Governor insisted regent of Badung to pay special attention to letter issued by provincial house of representative of Bali with regard to beach sand exploitation at Geger beach. The letter raised two recommendations. The first one was addressed to the Governor, calling for a follow up of the meeting between the two parties regarding the issue. The second one insisted for law enforcement to every occuance of law violations.

With regard to follow up on the Governor’s letter, Suambara who was accompanied by head of public relation of the regent’s office Gede Wijaya during the interview, told that so far the regent has not made any response, as the letter has just been received. Nevertheless, Suambara added that regent A.A. Gde Agung expresses his appreciation to attention of both the provincial house of representatives and the governor of Bali.

In principle the provicial house of representatives of Bali supports completion of beach revitalization projects. “We do agree on imprtance of beach revitalization projects, however we should not teach our people to violate existing regulation”, commented chairman of 1st commission of Bali provincial house of representatives Made Arjaya. He further explained that permit for exploitation of sand at Geger beach for revitalization of Kuta beach  has clearly violated regulation as it was issued without accompanying analysis of environmental impacts. Therefore the house insisted for suspension as the project may bring negative environmental impact, especially to beaches in Nusa Dua area.
