10 Rivers In Bali In Severe Pollution

October 24th, 2008

10 rivers crossing regency borders in Bali are in severe pollution. The pollution is resulted from different sectors including domestic (house hold waste), commercial (hotel, restaurants, etc.) and industrial (such as textile factory). Quality of the water is continuously getting worse. Head of Environmental Laboratory of Bali Environmental Agency Drs. Gede Suarjana, M.Si. explained the fact in the presentation of the draft on the new regulation for Bali waste pool location.

The ten rivers include Tukad Badung, Tukad Mati, Tukad Ayung, Tukad Jinah, Tukad Pakerisan, Tukad Sungsang, Tukad Yeh Penet, Tukad Saba, Tukad Yeh Sungi, and Tukad Unda. The worst among the ten are Tukad Badung in Denpasar and Tukad Mati in Kuta. Both Tukad Badung and Tukad Mati are continuously getting both domestic and industrial pollutans in of Denpasar and Kuta respectively.

Classification of the pollution level is based on increasing pollution indicators such as BOD (biological oxygen demand), XOD (Xemical Oxygen Demand), phosphat, oil, and muddiness.

In addition to river pollution Bali is also facing even more serious issues resulting in degradation of environmental quality. First issue is global warming resulting in extreme climate changes. Second issue is population density with soaring annual increase of 1.4%. At the moment Bali is filled up by a population of 3,442,60o each of which has a potential to waste 2.75 liters of liquid and 2-3 kilograms of rubbish every day. Accummulation of rubbish and waste put enormous pressure on the environment resulting in serious irrecoverable damages.

Research shown that due to lack of transportation vehicles, manpower, and space, every day an average of 593 cubic meters of rubbish is missed to be collected and dumped properly. The situation is continuously getting worse along with the growth of both population and industry.

To stop worsening condition, the government is planning to innitiate a new Governor’s bill on rubbish pooling locations in each and every regencies and cities. The bill include forcing large scale industry to prepare for their own rubbish processing system prior to disposal. Additionally the government is also drafting a regulation on mandatory donation to those producing waste, which will be used to finance environmental preservation programs.
