Urge For Careful Forestry Management

October 25th, 2008

Bali is currently in risky situation with very limited space of buffering forest. The risk level is nearly similar to other Indonesian provinces in Java and Sumatra. Head of Forest Mapping Agency (BPKH) Ir. Agus Nurhayat M.M. Agr. during journalistic training for functional officials of the forestry office yesterday (Friday, Oct 24th).

Agus further explained that Bali has only 24% forest area, which is 6% below ideal standard. “Without proper management of forest area, Bali will soon fall into ecosystem devastation. Therefore government officials in Bali have to be very careful in managing forest and water buffering areas,” said Agus.

Realizing the serious situation, BKPH has been very selective in granting approval on utilization of forest area for various purposes. At the moment there are 58 commissioned forest management. “We have formed a special team to evaluate those commissioned areas,” said Agus. In the areas with more than 30% forest coverage, forrest commissioning is subject to cost as regulated on PP No. 2/2008.

Environmental observer A.A. Raka Dalem said that the lowering forest coverage in Bali has to be considered as a serious devastation potential. Failure in management and conservation of the forest area will increase intensity of flood in Bali. “I urge for increasing awareness in environmental preservation in Bali. Environmental preservation has to be seriously considered as a public interest in creating and implementing governmental policies,” said Raka Dalem.

He further explained that low forest coverage in a small island with high population density is very risky. In addition to public safety, the threat also affects other ecosystems in Bali biodiversity potential. “Awareness of govenrment officials to environmental issues needs to be implemented in real instead of only in discussions,” said Raka Dalem.
