Gianyar to Have Representative Open Stage

June 21st, 2009

In their effort to protect the image of Gianyar as a cultural resource, the government of Gianyar regency is planning to build an open stage for art and cultural performance in Gianyar. Instead of constructing brand new building, they prefer to revitalize existing building located in the eastern side of the current cultural center of Gianyar.

Estimated cost for the project is 1.5 billion rupiah which will be financed out of local budget in 2010. Controversy arose as the plan was brought up at the time the local government in severe finacial constrain, which was exposed as the reason for rejection of a number of proposed infrastructure refurbishment.

Head of Gianyar’s Office for Culture, Cok Rai Widiarsa said that the cost for revitalization of building located on the east side of the cultural center fits the cost estimation proposed by hired consultant.

Cost for revitalizing existing building is significantly lower than costructing a brand new one from the scratch. On the other hand, if the open stage built away from the cultural center, the cultural cecter will loose its function, and surely but slowly will get forgotten.
