Earthquake in Bali

Residents of Bali and the western part of Sunda Islands, locally known as Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) were shocked by an earthquake. Fortunately recorded as 5.6 on richter scale, the earthquake did not accompanied by tsunami potential.

Information published by the National Bureau for Meteorology and Geophysics (BMG), center point of the earthquake taking place at 11.37.36 local time on Monday, July 20th 2009, was located at coordinate of 8.93 south – 117.75 east, 21 kilometers below the surface. Approximate location is about 60 kilometers away to the south of Sumbawa Besar, one among many islands of Lesser Sunda.

The earthquake was quite strong in the cities of Nusa Tenggara such as Sumbawa Besar, Mataram, Labuhan Bajo, and Taliwang. Residents of Bali including those residing in the capital of Denpasar and tourist centers down the south peninsula such as Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran, and Nusa Dua also felt the shake although in a weaker extent. No damages have been reported so far.
