The Students Walked Eight Kilometers

September 28th, 2009

SMPN 3 Rendang at Banjar Batusesa, Rendang, Karangasem just had their new school building last year. Even though they have to go through with walking for about eight kilometers, their learning spirit is so high. Proved by 103 students where two of them got achievement scholarship.

Despite the fact that motivation in studying is not balance with its facility, especially for the schoolbooks. “In here one schoolbook is used by four students,” said the headmaster of SMPN 3 Rendang, Drs. I Wayan Suiji, when he received books and television donation from Bali Post and Tarukan Media Dharma Publisher.

Besides giving books and television, there is also circumference library. In that car, the student can borrow books published by Bali Post and Tarukan Media Dharma. Other than borrow books, they also will be given newspaper published by Bali Post Media for free.

Suiji confirmed that in this rural school still lack of facilities. New building just finished in 2008 with only one unit of building where there are three rooms for learning process. There is also another building for Headmaster office and teacher’s office, also a library. Considering there are only three classrooms whether the student can only be accommodated by five classrooms, then the teacher is forced to succumb. The teacher’s room and also the library are used for student classroom. Since there is no big amount of books in the library make this unit can be used as a classroom.

“Honestly we actually lack of schoolbooks in here. From the fund of BOS –School Operational Expense- we only able to give one book for used together by four students. That’s why we really need help for this problem even if that’s mean books that had been formerly used before,” said Suiji.

This school had their first student in 2006/2007. This school stands as the baranch of Junior High and make use the building of elementary school, SDN 3 Menanga in Batuseta. At that time they only had 49 students and in 2008/2009 they graduated all from the school. “Today we have 148 students and five classrooms. Grade VII for 54 students, class VIII and IX each of them are 44 students and 50 students.”

In this school there are 25 teachers, five of them are PNS –Civil Government employee- and for the rest of them are official teachers from surrounding village. One of the teacher said that the learning spirit of the student is quite high. It is proved by the settlement location which is far away from the school that is at the west slope of Mount Agung, like in Banjar Temukus, there was student who went through eight kilometer distance to reach school.

Like Ni Kadek Darti (who had graduated) once won as the winner of broad jump in Bali Province of Porsenijar –Art and Sport Competition- last year. “Darti can be considered as nature athlete. The distance reach from his house with the school is about 12 kilometers. She has been trained to run to school. Besides that the students also participate in reading contest in Klungkung even though they only reach big five.
