Seventy Three Rivers in Bali Are Dryness
Dry season critically affect the condition of the rivers. From 165 rivers, 73 of them had dry or have no water. While the other 92 rivers still contain water even thought the volume of it continuously becomes smaller. Half of those dryness rivers are located in West Buleleng, East Buleleng, Kubu and Seraya.
The head of Public Employment Department, I Gusti Nyoman Sura Adnyana, M.Sc. on Monday (October 19th) assessed that the difficulty in finding water is extremely felt by those who live on hill or mountain while the source of the water is on the valley.
To overcome this problem, he said that they cannot conduct fast action. First there was a plan to take advantage of wasting water in Tukad Unda used estuary of the second reservoir but it cost too much. That’s why several rivers are chosen close to Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar. Now there is rubber reservoir Tukad Penet –Penet River- (Basung and Tabanan border). According to the plan, the amount of water that will be taken for water consumption in Denpasar and South Badung is about 300-500 liter per second. The process of water taking from Tukad Penet will be started from the downstream of subak –water for rice-field irrigation- means that subak cannot utilized that river anymore.
Whereas, the short of water in east Denpasar, Sanur until Nusa Dua and half of Gianyar will be solved by Tukad Petanu reservoir that will be built in 2010. The volume water is approximately about 300-500 liter per second for clean water utilization.
Candidasa
Dryness also happened in Candidasa, Regional People’s Delegation Council member, I Nyoman Sadra, B.A. assessed that Nyuh Tebel area had already dry.
In the past, the water of that river was enough for tens of hectare of rice-field in the north of Candidasa before the Tenganan T-junction and produce rice. Even in the dry season the length of irrigation of that river become smaller but the subak farmer still can arrange to plant rice and palawija -crops planted as 2d crop in dry season- in order. But now that river had dried, the rice-field gone and the farmer cannot plant their rice anymore.
