Once A Destroyer Now A Conserver

transpalansi-karang-02Starting as a nature destroyer, a citizen of Serangan Island in Bali now turns his side as the fighter of nature conserver.

He is Wayan Patut that recently active in coral reef conservation in Serangan Island that before is damaged by the local people with their wild exploitation.

Within this last six year, Wayan Patut days filled more with nature conservation effort, especially for the coral reef in Serangan Island of Denpasar.

At a fishermen workshop in his village, Wayan Patut together with some fishermen in Serangan Island actively making house for these coral reefs as they called it “reef ball” and “pyramid.”

Besides, Wayan and other fishermen, “Karya Segara” also makes “base rock” or artificial rock as the replacement of the natural rock.

Coral reef conservation effort was started by Wayan Patut since 2003. It began when he realize coral reef severe damage at Pulau Serangan beach.

”Before 2003, fishermen and rock miner in Serangan including me, actively damaged coral reef in this island. We cut it then sell it as the building material with high sell price,” explained Patut.

Today he campaign the importance of coral reef preservation as fish habitat and others sea biota.

Through this effort, Wayan Patut keep continue delivering his message that environmental defacement is forbidden conducted by anybody no matter his reason was.

”Coral reef is very important for the life in the sea. As a living place for various kind of fish, this coral reef also function as a good carbon absorber, can maintain cleanness of the sea water,” said Patut
