Potassium Fishing Rampant Threatens Candi Dasa

Fishing used toxic chemical such as potassium or using explosive material keep happen and threaten one tourism object in Bali, which is Candidasa in Karangasem. Karangasem Council member, Nyoman Sadra, B.A. on Tuesday (January 19) yesterday said that the culprits who catch the ornamental fish as well as lobster used toxic chemical gets rampant around Candidasa waters.
Sadra who also an activist of Lembaga Swadaya Masyarakat (LSM) lingkungan hidup Karangasem – Non-governmental Organization of Karangasem environmental – said that his party two days ago received some report from local people around Candidasa that they saw certain ornamental fishing activity with potassium. The culprits are suspected not a local Balinese people since the boat not characterized Bali’s fishing boat ornament.
Therefore, as the council member he insisted for the related institution to take action against those fishermen who catch the fish using toxic chemical or explosive. If it keep continue, then the underwater environment will be threatened as well as Candidasa tourism existence and Karangasem as a whole.
It is said that during November until February was the season for chemical toxic or explosive fishing. This is due to fish habitual in this season where they transmigrate into the shallow waters near the shore. Moreover, there is bad weather at the sea in this season too makes it hard for the local fishermen who sail with outboard engine boats to observe any of those those ornamental fish catchers. Those irresponsible culprits had destroyed the coral reef at Karangasem waters that famous for its beauty together with its ornamental fish variety.
Before 1990, the coral reef close to the small islands looks so beautiful, especially at the south sea of Karangasem precisely at Gili Tapekong Island, Kambing Island and Karang Island in fron of Pasir Putih beach for it is stand as the Bugbug and Perasi border. “There are varied of fish includes within it are ornamental fish and lobster, but today it hard for the fishermen to find those fish,” he said.
Besides Sadra, to other Karangasem Council member also planned to observe while fishing at the beach in Karangasem, such as Candidasa. They also will cooperate with the local fishermen to secure the underwater environment.
