UNEP Recommended Sea Rehabilitation

United Nation Institution for environment program or known as UNEP recommended to the countries in the world to conduct rehabilitation effort for the sea ecosystem. This recommendation was delivered in concern with Blue Carbon development concept launched by UNEP.

Blue Carbon concept could prove the role of sea ecosystem and coastal area that filled with mangrove forest, sea grass and coral reef in absorbing the carbon.

UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner in his statement toward Blue Carbon launching in Nusa Dua Bali on Thursday (February 25) mentioned the rehabilitation effort toward coastal area and the sea should begin to develop. Moreover, this last 40 years there are numerous damages happened to the coastal and sea ecosystem due to the excessive exploitation.

“Since the last 40 years lot of damages increase the ecosystem exacerbation. That in fact we knew it could worsen the climate change. We lost 50 percent of mangrove forest and 30 percent of sea grass,” said Achim Steiner firmly.

Achim Steiner state that the efforts to anticipate climate change and choices to reduce the emission should keep running and become the main attention for international community. Including within it is blue carbon in concern with the sea and the coastal.
