An ASEAN Senior Official Meeting of Law Department in Nusa Dua Bali, Thursday (April 29), countries that incorporated together under ASEAN was failed to agree on treaty existence or an agreement for extradition between countries in South East Asia.
In which, the proposal for extradition cooperation agreement in ASEAN territory suggested by Indonesia was only supported by Malaysia and Thailand.
Head of the meeting, Ahmad M. Ramli confessed that most of the ASEAN member rejected the existence of extradition agreement and tend to choose the extradition orientation which shall not binding.
According to Ramli, all ASEAN countries member rejected the existence of extradition agreement generally did not want to bind in a regional obligation.
“Since treaty means no rejection and the most important thing in extradition is hand over the criminal in certain place,” asserted Ahmad M. Ramli.
Ramli confessed that Indonesian suggestion regarding extradition cooperation in the beginning is an extradition for all crimes not limited at one single crime.
Ramli also added that whilst waiting for common legal umbrella in Asean territory concerning extradition then for a while the extradition agreement between Asean countries could be done bilaterally.
