Traditional Gangsing Game

Coffee farmer in Pujungan Village, Middle Pupuan district in the middle of waiting their coffee harvest estimated for another next two weeks. In order to fill their spare time, the local people, most of them are coffee farmer held traditional gangsing game.

Almost every day this kind of game been held whilst waiting the harvest time just like nowadays. Moreover, the harvest season for this year coincide with the school holidays.

The players are not kids only but also adults. This gangsing game usually held at wide field such as school field or at citizen house whose field is wide enough. The time is uncertain, sometimes in the morning, at noon, even on night.

Head of Pujungan Village, Gede Putu Santiartha explained that this gangsing game had exist since he was born, even his parent had already known this game.

The interesting part of gangsing in this area that the game would not be held every year. Instead, they hold it every coffee harvest season or when other crops season come.

“What is clear here that gangsing game always held when the coffee harvest time comes,” he explained. He also did not know the reason of this gangsing game always waiting for harvesting season.

“This game has existed since long, even my father has found this game precisely just like today,” he added.
It is said, that gangsing game in his village divided into two teams. Each team has eight people. Team who succeeds hit five times in row get one point.

The assessment conducted by one judge who examined the game. He confessed that his people usually find it difficult to find good wood to make gangsing.

“Nice wood for gangsing is orange wood, but this kind of wood is rare in this village since there is no one of people here have orange farm anymore,” he explained.
